Michael Robison is a veteran strategic consultant and brand development innovator with a diverse background in finance, sales, development, marketing, communications and staffing. He was recently named one of the Top Business Leaders of 2020 by Yahoo! Finance.

Michael has amassed almost 20 years in senior leadership within growth focused organizations. He has worked in multiple roles–as a Chief Executive Officer, as a tech startup founder and a non-profit executive director. 

“I think what sets me apart from others is my focus on helping senior leaders create continuity in their personal lives and professional lives. I want a person to be fulfilled in their career and at home, and that comes from focusing on alignment.” Michael says.

Michael is also a consultant with the D5 Group, and has provided his service to fortune 500 companies and more. His clients have included Virgin, Coca Cola, WOO, GroupM, IKEA, British Petroleum, Wynn Resorts, and Caesars Entertainment. Over the last five years, his projects have generated more than 1.6 billion USD in revenue for his clients.

Nonetheless, Michael stresses the importance of aligning work life and personal life. This is why it is also important for him that aside from work, he splits his time between his homes in Nashville and Los Angeles with his partner Cameron Williams, an accomplished actor, with whom he shares custody of five kids.

“Two of my kiddos are adopted, one from Ethiopia and the other from Haiti. We have a very unique, amazing and modern family!” Michael states.

Moreover, Michael is the Chief Operations Officer and co-founder of Stay Share, a modern technology solution for property management in the vacation industry. They focus primarily on short term vacation rentals, such as AirBnB.

In fact, what motivated Michael to start his business was opportunity and need–there was a need and an opportunity to fill it. He believes that even with the changes in the world’s economy due to COVID-19, people will still travel and want a holiday, and Stay Share will be there to provide the service they are looking for. 

“Without need and opportunity, you aren’t starting a business, you are starting a hobby!” Michael states. 

Michael thinks the biggest challenge when starting a business is believing in yourself. Even if you think your idea is the greatest in the world, if you don’t believe in yourself, you will not have the courage to lead. Michael stresses that without that belief in yourself, you are unlikely to have the stamina to carry on when business gets hard. 

“This reality is what has driven me in my consulting practice, D5 Group, for years.” Michael says. “Having experienced failed businesses and a couple of recessions, I understand the impact that tough times can have on business owners and leaders. And I have a desire to leave a legacy of hope for leaders and entrepreneurs.”

But to start a business, it is crucial to have the right mindset, which is not the same as having a positive mindset. Michael underlines that a positive mindset is nothing if it is not supported by a mindset of “whatever it takes.” 

“You have to have the attitude and mindset that you will do whatever it takes to bring your ideas to life.” Michael advises. 

Michael also advises to surround yourself with people who believe in you and have the “whatever it takes” mindset. Finally, he advises to find a mentor–not an idol or an example, a true mentor. Someone who has failed and has success.

All of this will help business owners to recognize fear and stare it in the face and conquer. This is crucial, according to Michael, because fear can kill more dreams than failure ever will. Fear holds people back from trying and it is a trap.
